Woodie, born Ryan Mitchell Wood, was an influential rapper and record producer from Antioch, California. Born on November 20, 1975, Woodie started his own record company, East Co. Co. Records, in 1997. He quickly gained a loyal following with his fast-paced style and introspective lyrics based on his real-life experiences.

In 1998, Woodie released his first EP, Yoc Influenced, which he entirely produced himself. In 2001, he released his debut studio album, Demonz n My Sleep, which showcased his unique sound and lyrical ability. Woodie’s final release was a collaborative album with rapper A-Wax titled 2 Sides of the Game.

Woodie’s tragic death occurred on March 7, 2007, at the young age of 31. While the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, it was believed to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds in Florence, Oregon. To this day, state and county officials hold no record of his death. Woodie’s grave at Holy Cross Cemetery in Antioch was also desecrated, and his headstone was stolen in 2018.

Despite his short career, Woodie’s impact on the West Coast rap scene and his devoted fans remain strong to this day. His music, which often dealt with themes of struggle, pain, and perseverance, continues to inspire and resonate with many. Woodie’s legacy continues through his music, which remains a testament to his unique talent and undeniable influence on the rap genre.
